Identiv works with great Japan printing to develop UHF RFID tags to monitor bridge cracks

Identiv announced that its UHF RFID tag is being used in a system that detects cracks in bridges and tunnels. The label was developed by Identiv for the Japanese partner large Japan print (DNP).

Identif UHF label product line is designed to include asset tracking, logistics and access to parking lot, design and application of multi industry. UHF technology uses radio spectrum transmission to read distances varying according to the tag size and the power delivered by the UHF reader, up to a few meters away.

DNP senior management company official Sakae Hikita said: "in Japan, most of the tunnel and bridge was built in 1960s, which means that their life has become very old. Therefore, the accidents caused by concrete are gradually increasing, which is a huge and serious problem. Local governments and operators are under the supervision of maintenance checks, but because of the complexity of the testing equipment and the complex skills of the workers, the cost of the inspection is quite high."

Therefore, DNP and Identiv to develop an infrastructure for monitoring RFID inlays, UHF chip can use tamper detection to detect structural cracks. Inlays have a longer reading distance and can be bonded to concrete structures. After the receiver receives radio waves, the system can monitor the state to avoid disaster. DNP has also developed adhesives for bonding sheets to concrete and irradiating the curing agent by ultraviolet (daylight) or fluorescent light.

The company reported that the new monitoring system through the UHF reader to read all the information collected by the block body, so as to reduce the detection time. The UHF technology of Identiv tag can realize longer communication distance. Small cracks are difficult to observe by the naked eye, but the inspector can make accurate assessments using the Identiv system. These data can then be transmitted to the local PC to produce a complete inspection report.
